We always recommend Hager or other large brand name manufacturers when it comes to choosing a consumer unit or fuse board. Hager, Wylex and Schneider Electric are all premium brands and are of the highest quality.
It is possible to buy cheaper items but your consumer unit / fuse board controls all the electrical installation in your property so in our opinion it is not the area to be cutting corners. In consumer unit. Surge protection and RCBO’s should also be considered if you want the best possible protection.
What consumer units do we fit?

The best consumer unit to fit in my opinion are Hager Design 10 range of fuse boards. They are far superior in build quality to any other unit that we have fitted and have a great balance between price and quality. We recommend that our customers use RCBOs over dual RCD to prevent the loss of more than one circuit in the event of a fault. However due to the cost implications they normally go for dual RCD.
All consumer units sold in UK/Europe meet minimum British Standards and EU safety standards specified by the relative regulatory organisations so if budget is a major concern on your project while choosing a consumer unit there are plenty of other options. How do I choose the right consumer unit / fuse board?
When asking what is the best 2022 consumer unit / fuse board? there is no real answer to this question. Most electricians will have their own preferences so the questions should be:

- What location and design do I need to be in-keeping with my house?
- What is my budget for this rewire or upgrade.
Several brands have designed fuse boards and consumer units with a keen eye for the design. The Schneider Electric Easy 9 and Hager Design 50 ranges are fantastic examples of this and would bother look fine out on show.
The Hager Design range includes three versions, Design 10, Design 30 and Design 50. Design 10 is suitable for installations where the board will not be on show. The stylish, yet practical aesthetics are coupled with practical time saving and feature rich benefits across both ranges.
Some brands make smaller scale consumer units like Wylex and mk etc these are great if your replacing in a small area or cupboard were size is an issue. Each manufacturers excels in different ways but what is best for you is not always what is best for the next job
Does the price matter?
All fuse boards and consumer units in 2022 should comply with the current regulations, BS7671 18th edition, be encased or constructed from a non-combustible material. Our electricians install Hager consumer units as they are very friendly to work on, come in at a great prices and are full of features.
At the end of the day It’s all up to personal choice really. We work with our customers to provide the best consumer unit for the project and offer advice where needed. One thing that we always make sure our customers take into account is future expansion. If you have a new consumer unit installed you should always have one bigger than you currently need as this will mean that you have plenty of room to install alterations or new circuits in the future.
Another reason for using a major brand is when the time comes for the upgrade years later you can still get parts for them if needed unlike the cheaper manufacturers where an addition later might mean replacing the fuse board again. We have completed many a fuse board change due to the fact that parts are now obsolete and not cost effective to try and source spares.
